About the Great North Run:
The Great North Run is one of the world’s largest races and is a sport event which should not be missed.
This iconic run sets off in the heart of Newcastle and finishes on the stunning seafront at South Shields. Thousands of professional and non-professional runners take part in this 13.1 mile event with hundreds of volunteers as well as support from family and friends along the way. With many sponsored runners from around the country getting involved, along with thousands of people running simply to raise money for charity, there is no event quite like it.
The Great North run first took place on 28th June, 1981 and was organised by Olympic runner Brendan Foster. The current Men’s and Women’s records are currently held by 2 Kenyans, Martin Mathathi and Mary Keitany. Martin holds the record with a time of 58:56 which hasn’t been broken in 7 years. Mary holds the women’s record with a time of 1:05:39 set in 2014.
Lots of celebrities like getting involved as well, so head down to the event and show your support for all the runners.
